By 2018, every security vendor had "AI" somewhere in their marketing. The word meant everything and nothing. I did this Dark Reading webinar specifically to cut through that — not because the technology is unimportant, but because vague claims actively hurt practitioners trying to make real decisions about where to invest.
The first thing worth establishing is what these terms actually mean in a security context. AI and machine learning are not synonymous. Machine learning is a specific technique: you give a model labeled examples, it finds patterns, and it generalizes from those patterns to new data. AI is a broader category, and most of what vendors call AI in security products is, more precisely, ML. The distinction matters because the failure modes are different. An ML model fails when the training data doesn't represent reality. Knowing that helps you ask better questions when evaluating a product.
The practical question for any security team isn't "does this use AI?" It's: what problem is it solving, and does the approach match the problem? Automated threat detection is a reasonable use case for ML — you can train on historical alerts and teach a model to surface the highest-fidelity signals. Anomaly detection at scale is another: defining what normal looks like per-entity and flagging deviation is exactly the kind of pattern-matching that benefits from a statistical approach. Neither of those requires hand-tuned rules that break every time the environment changes.
The resource argument for ML in security operations is also real, though it's often overstated. The honest version is this: analysts spend a disproportionate amount of time triaging alerts that turn out to be noise. A model that can absorb that triage burden accurately — prioritizing incidents based on historical resolution patterns — frees analysts for work that actually requires judgment. That's not AI replacing analysts. That's a filter so analysts can focus on the cases where they're irreplaceable.
Where ML genuinely earns its complexity is in the speed of response. Detection-to-action time is a meaningful metric, and anything that compresses it has real defensive value. Behavioral analytics that fires the moment an entity deviates from its baseline will beat a signature-based rule that requires someone to have written the rule first.
The implementation reality is less exciting than the pitch. Data preparation takes most of the time. Models require validation against your actual environment, not a vendor's test dataset. Integration with your existing tools is a project, not a configuration. None of that is a reason to avoid the technology — it's a reason to be realistic about timelines and to start with a well-scoped problem rather than trying to "implement AI" as a general program.
